Ladies' Auxiliary Hospital Donations
The Hospital Fund is supported by donations from the Auxiliaries in our Command. "Eight of the nine Districts receives a yearly donation of $2,000.00, the ninth in District #7 received one every 5 years since there are only 4 active auxiliaries in the Northwest Territories. Each of our eight out of nine Districts will receive a yearly donation of approximately $2,000 to a hospital, nursing home, palliative care or extended care facility. Donations will rotate in a District until each facility has received a donation and then rotate again. The donation will remain in that District should a facility close. This has proven to be an invaluable fund as we face so many cutbacks from provincial and federal government funding of our facilities. Donations for the period 1998-2005 has totalled $195,638.63, but this figure does not include donations made by the individual auxiliaries in their own communities.
The Fund also supports the Colonel Belcher Veterans' Centre in Calgary and the Veterans at the Diane & Irving Kipnes Centre". Our many hospital visitors organize special events for our Veterans in these facilities. They may be bingos, lunches at their branches, entertainments and veteran comforts. A visit proves invaluable, as many of these Veterans never receive company or family visitors. Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets are distributed to these Veterans.
The members of the Auxiliaries also visit many Veterans who are 'shut-ins' in their homes. Our volunteers visit the facilities on a regular basis or as needed. They are special ladies and are excellent representatives for our Alberta-NWT Ladies' Auxiliary. Their visits are eagerly awaited and appreciated. This is sometimes their only visitor.
